The History of Auburn & Carl, bu Myldred Flanigan Hutchins:
Tom G. Ethridge told this story of his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Jane Rakestraw (Manley) Ethridge. During the Civil War she received word that her husband was in Decatur and very ill. The family was asked to come for him. There was no one to go except her sister, Mrs. Gideon Tanner, and herself. She drove a one-horse wagon the 40 plus miles which was a day's journey over rough roads, as well as a very frightening journey for two women who did not know whom or what they might encounter.
When the two women reached Decatur they learned that Mr. Ethridge was dead. They then had the lonely task of bearing his body home for burial. It is doubtful that either of them had ever been that far away from home before. Added to the fear and grief, Mrs. Ethridge also had to face the prospect of raising six children, of providing them with food and clothes, without the help of her husband; indeed an awesome experience to confront anyone.

The children of Manley Ethridge and Mary Jane Rakestraw include:
1. Bob Ethridge (1861-1942)
