MAURICE E. BREWER

Maurice Eugene Brewer, 80, a lifelong rural Atlantic resident, passed away Monday afternoon, February 24, at the Cass County memorial Hospital.

He was the youngest son of Alvah and Maude Rich Brewer. He was born April 12, 1916, on the family farm 10 miles northeast of Atlantic and lived there his entire life. He attended country school with his older brothers, Calvin and Orville. Maurice graduated from the 8th grade and took an extra year of animal practice, farming and law classes. He was active in 4-H and has a chest full of ribbons to prove it. His proudest moment was winning the State Fair Grand Champion with his Holstein heifer. He continued showing cattle most of his life with his brother Orville. In the 1940's he and his brother Orville farmed together with their parents and began raising turkeys. They raised between 30,000 - 50,000 a year for nearly a decade. Huts popped up all over the farmstead and water lines and gas heaters were installed by the hundreds. Maurice said he and Orville bought a farm off of those turkeys. During this time they still had dairy cows, hogs and land work. When Maurice's parents passed away, Orville and Maurice purchased the family farm. Calvin had married some time before and farmed near Brayton. Around this time they invested in a large Angus herd and showed their cattle around the state and country. They were members of the Black Angus Cattlemen Association. Soon Maurice and Orville were known as the "Brewer Brothers." Where you saw one the other was sure to follow. They were recognized by their blue and white striped bibs all over town. They were also known for their luscius homegrown muskmelons and supplied many grocery stores in Atlantic as well as their friends. Maurice enjoyed gardening and farming and telling stories along the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents in 1967; two brothers, Calvin Brewer in 1981 and Orville Brewer in 1991; and a sister-in-law, Vera Brewer in 1990.

The above was from the back of Maurice's funeral card and not quoted in it's entirety and spelling corrected.
