FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - William R. Smith, 56, of Fayetteville, N.C., formerly of Cambridge, died Wednesday (June 13, 2001) at Durham VA Medical Center.
He was born De. 19, 1944, in Cambridge, a son of the late William E. Smith and Helen P. (McConkey Smith) Buckey.
He was a graduate of Sarahsville High School in 1962. Upon graduating, he entered the United States Army and had tours of duty in New Jersey, New York and North Carolina. His foreign service included Vietnam, Iran, Japan and Italy. He retired after 27 years of service as a master sergeant. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4542 in Spring Lake, N.C., and an associate member of the Special Forces Association.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas E. Smith and Jack D. Smith, and a daughter, Sharon Lynn Smith.
He leaves Carrie Fitzwater of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sons, Michael W. Smith of Supply, N.C., and Dennis A. Smith of Spring Lake, N.C.; a daughter, Loretta Smith of Spring Lake; two sisters, Helen B. (Penny) Bobo of Dover, Tenn., and Judith J. Keyser of Massillon; three brothers, Mark A. Buckey and Paul Buckey of Big Rock, Tenn., and David J. Buckey of Moore, Okla; and six grandchildren.
Friends were received at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home in Fayetteville on Monday, June 18. The funeral was at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Chapel at Ft. Bragg, N.C., on Tuesday, June 19 with Chaplain Davis officiating.
Official burial was in the Main Post Cemetery at Ft. Bragg, N.C. with full military honors.
