William DeLacey Abernathy, 85 year old retired farmer of the Pleasant Valley Community, died at Fairhaven Nursing Home on Monday morning at 5 o'clock after several weeks illness.
Funeral services were conducted at 10 a. m. Wednesdayat Bennett-May Funeral Home by the Rev. W. H. Mansfield, the Rev. Walter R. Cortner, and the Rev. J. C. Elkins with burial taking place in the Abernathy Cemetery in Pleasant Valley.
Mr. Abernathy was a native of Giles County, son of the late James Edward and Rebecca Denty Abernathy, members of pioneer families of the county.
He was a member of the Pleasant Valley Methodist Church.
Mr. Abernathy's wife, the former Miss Elizabeth Buford, died March 23, 1964.
He had made his home in Pleasant Valley since birth, and was widely known throughout the United States and Canada as an authority on the breeding and raising of sheep.
He is survived by two sons, U. S. Navy Commander Buford Abernathy of Louisville, Ky., and William DeLacey Abernathy of Columbia, and three grandchildren.
