Susannah was the daughter of John and Penelope Purnell and the wife of Julius Horton. It is thought that they were married about 1799 at Halifax County, N.C. Sometime before 1818 Julius, Susannah and family left N.C. and moved west, however, Julius became ill and died in Washington Parish, Louisiana. After a few years Susannah and her family moved on to settle in Texas, which at that time was a province of Mexico. Susannah and Julius' children were: Nancy, Elizabeth Jane, Sam W., Alexander P., Martha R., William Wade, Susan P. and Henry P.
