Mary Elizabeth was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Jane (Haygood) Harrell. After Col. Alex Horton's first wife, died in 1846, Mary and Col. Horton were married Dec 30, 1847. Mary Elizabeth and Alex's children were: Wade William, Elizabeth Jane, Susan Purnell, Lavenia Catherine, Emily Lenora, Alexander Elisha and Mary Zenobia.
