Mildred B. Laufer (nee Bode) passed away at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home, Sunday, July 4, 2004. Age 86 years.

Survived by her husband of 62 years, Martin H. Laufer; a daughter, Kathleen Anne (Michael) Massa; a son, Philip Walter (Mary Ann) Laufer; three grandsons, Martin M. (Susan), Stevan A. (Julie) Massa and Dustin P. Laufer; two granddaughters, Jessica A. and Kristin M. Laufer; four great-grandchildren, Michael J., Nathan A., Kathleen E. and John M. Massa. Also numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Elmer and a sister, Edna.

Born February 23, 1918 in Ash Grove Twp. Buckley, IL to Walter and Matilda (Seggebruch) Bode. She was baptized by her grandfather, Rev. Henry Bode on March 3, 1918 and confirmed by the Rev. A.H. Werfelmann in Hinsdale, IL on May 22, 1932.

Mildred and Martin were married on January 15, 1942 in Hinsdale, IL by Rev. Paul Scherer and Rev. H.A. Laufer.

Mildred was active in church and community activities all her life. She attended Zion Lutheran School in Hinsdale. In her late teens she began singing solos for weddings, funerals and special occasions.

In her early 20s she was an officer in the "Q" Sone of Walther League. Mildred and Marty were founding members of the Peace Lutheran Church in Plainfield, where she taught Sunday school, acted as part-time church secretary and was active in Altar Guild and Lutheran Woman Missionary League. She was also an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Band Parents, PTA and 4-H. Mildred served as an election judge from her early years in Plainfield through the last November's election.

Her friends know her as an avid card player - any kind, any time. After they moved to Joliet, Mildred was active in and often treasurer of the Ladies Aid and the Altar Guild at St. Peter Lutheran Church. For several years she was newsletter secretary and "vacation" supply in the office. Active in the local AAL (Thrivent) branch as treasurer. Mildred and Marty did seminars as Lamplighters and "SMART" trainer.

Lying in state at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 310 N. Broadway, Thursday, July 8 from 10:00 a.m. until services at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Lee M. Jany officiating.

Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

Memorials to St. Peter Lutheran Church or Joliet Area Community Hospice Home will be appreciated.

Visitation will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
