Galen C. "Gale" Lerum, 89, of Crookston, Minnesota, died peacefully, Tuesday evening, January 12, 2010 in the Riverview Hospital in Crookston with loving family members by his side. Gale was born on March 12, 1920 in Crookston, the son of Frank and Elsie (Bjorgo) Lerum. He grew up in Crookston and graduated from Central High School in 1938. During World War II, Gale worked at the Post Office before starting his longtime career in the hardware business. Gale was united in marriage to Lillie Fournier on July 6, 1943. Sadly, Lillie passed away in 1962. Gale was employed at the Coast-to-Coast Store before purchasing the business in 1970. Gale married Emma Erickson on August 10, 1968 and she passed away in1977. He loved working, and knew everyone by name and made every customer feel welcome. Gale always had a joke to tell and his sense of humor stayed with him until the end. On October 26, 1984, Gale married Gladys Fontaine and they shared twenty-three years together. She passed away in 2008. Gale loved telling people he had twelve children and he loved spending time with each of them and their families. All who were fortunate to share in his life will cherish his memory.

Loving family members include his children, Gary (Maureen) Lerum of Blaine, MN, Sandy (Peter) Kucera of Bemidji, MN, Bonnie (Daniel) Swenson of Crookston, MN and Greg "Fuji" Lerum of Crookston; step-children, Linda (Dale) Wolden, Walter (Nancy) Erickson, Curtis (Jean) Erickson, Kathy (Wayne) Wagner, Brian (Lisa) Erickson Chuck (Katie) Fontaine, Linda (Billy) LaVigne and Margaret (Ziggy) Blondeel; twenty-three grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, sisters, Elba Harstad of Victorville, CA and Leota Franklin of Grand Forks, ND; sister-in-law, Lorraine Lerum of Crookston; brother-in-law, Loren Knudson of Grand Forks; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Besides his three wives, Lillie, Emma and Gladys, Gale was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elsie; sisters, Francis and Bette Jane; brother, Robert; an infant daughter; and grandsons, Michael Swenson and Bruce Wolden. Gale will also be remembered by many of the Villa residents and staff who also became "family".

The memorial service for Galen will be held at 10:00, Monday, January 18, 2010 in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, with Rev. Steve Bohler, officiating. Visitation with the family will be held on Sunday at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home from 5-7:00 pm, with a 7:00 pm prayer service, and also for an hour before the memorial service at the church.
