Mrs. Johnson was the first one buried in the cemetery, and as requested by her, she was buried so that the eyes of the minster could rest on her grave as he stood in the pulpit. She was the mother of Governor Hershel V Johnson.

Sacred / To the Memory of / Mrs. Nancy Johnson. / Born 27th, June A.D. 1786. / She departed this life 28th, August A.D. 1855 / In the 70th year of her age. / She was a worshipper at Hopeful Church / from her childhood, and for many years, / a member of its communion. / her remains are deposited here, / by her own request / the first to consecrate this Grove / to the repose of the dead as it has so long been / to the devotions of the living. / "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."
