Reverend Wright and his wife had no children of their own, but they adopted (legally or otherwise), his nephew, also named John. The nephew was known as John Wright as a child but as Rev John Wright Borders as an adult.

In this detail from a page from the 1910 federal census, Forest Twp, Clinton Co, IN, John S. Wright is head of household, and John Wright, age 17, his nephew is listed as "Ward." [The nephew had been listed as John C. Wright, son, in the 1900 census; it is not known what either the middle initial C. in the 1900 census or the middle initial E. in the 1910 census might have stood for.]
