Mrs Alice Kaine,
Civil War Widow,
102 on Wednesday

Spends Pleasant
Day With Friends
and Her Memories

Mrs Alice Kaine, who has seen 102 years roll by celebrated the event in her room at the Grand Army Home at King, Wednesday, and provided quite an occasion for members of the staff and patients at the hospital.

The little old lady knew Abraham Lincoln, as a resident of Springfield, IL, and later had occasion to assist Booker T. Washington the great colored educator. She met Washington at Tuskegee Institute and became interested in his work and plans.

The County Post correspondent, Rispah E. Crowell, at King, called on Mrs Kaine on her anniversary day and wrote of her impressions of the occasion. Miss Crowell says:

"Mrs Alice J. Kaine, Civil War widow, is as gay and bright as a singing bird, today, Jan 29, and thoroughly enjoying her 102nd birthday. When your reporter called at 10:45am she sat on the edge of her bed, her eyes sparkling as she talked. She called attention to a beautiful three-tier cake and a dozen red roses, Colonel and Mrs Holden's gift to her. She also has scores of birthday cards and a clipping from the Milwaukee Sentinel, much to her delight.

Just then Dr Hafemeister and several hospital employees came to offer congratulations and Happy Birthday wishes and she beamed on him as he talked and told her 'We are glad to have you with us'. She was wondering what to do with her birthday cake, but evidently she had a clear idea about it and how the cutting should be managed; for she told of having treated 23 veterans in the hospital with her cake last year and how happy it made them. She also told of writing a letter to her brother last week and one who has seen her letters to be mailed said her writing is remarkable.

Also included among the gifts received by Mrs Kaine on this auspicious occasion was a plant, the gift of Chaplain and Mrs Holliday of the Home

NEARLY 103 YEARS OLD
MRS ALICE KAINE OF
VETERANS HOME, DIES

Prominent Educator and
Long Time State Resident
Passes Away Wednesday

Grand Army Home's oldest and most colorful member quietly passed away Wednesday when death claimed Mrs Alice Kaine.

Mrs Kaine's 102nd birthday part last Jan 29 received wide recognition at the Home and in the state press. Mrs Kaine "the little lady who knew Lincoln", had been failing for about a week, but death followed a single day of confinement to her bed, due to a heart condition and extreme old age. She had been a member of Grand Army Home since 1933.

Last Friday, when the Home was being inspected by the state legislative committee, they called to pay their respects to Mrs Kaine, who carried on a lively conversation, recalling in detail her 102nd birthday party.

Born in Chillicothe, Ohio, she spent most of her girlhood in Springfield, Illinois, where she met Lincoln during his campaign for President. There too, she met Dr John L. Kaine, whom she married and with whom she moved to Milwaukee, where he became and editorial writer for the Milwaukee Sentinel under Horace Rublee.

Mrs Kaine served 27 years on the board of the Wisconsin School for Girls and helped institute the first parole system there. She also was a charter member of the Milwaukee Chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution.

After her husband's death, a friend interested her in the Tuskegee Institute where Booker T. Washington, famed Negro educator, was launching the first experiment in higher education for his race.

She went south and helped mold the curriculum at the institution, where she worked for several years with the Washingtons.

Surviving is a brother, Austine W. Cutright, of Milwaukee.

Services will be at 1:30pm this Friday at the Grand Army Home Chapel with Chaplain R.R. Holliday in charge.

Burial in the Home Cemetery.
