Helen Phyllis (Thelin) Greenfield, daughter of Victor and Rosella (Kones) Thelin was born May 27, 1926 at Kones' Korner near Castlewood, South Dakota. In 1930 they moved to the Black Hills and she graduated from Deadwood High School. She also received her teaching certificate from Sioux Falls College and taught elementary classes and music in Lake Norden. After her marriage to Carl Greenfield on March 24, 1946 in Castlewood, she taught grade school and music in the Castlewood School System. She retired from teaching in the late 1940s to raise her family but substitute taught in Castlewood for many years. Phyllis entered the Estelline Nursing and Care Center on June 14, 2000 and died there on Saturday, November 8, 2003 at the age of 77 years, 5 months and 11 days. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as choir director and taught Sunday School for many years. She was also a member of the Castlewood American Legion Auxiliary, Study Club and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. Phyllis was also instrumental in starting the Community Chorus which does cantatas and local programs. She enjoyed following her children's and grandchildrens sporting events, square dancing, playing cards and embroidering.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Carl of Castlewood; two sons, Don Greenfield and his wife Lana of Doland, SD and Bob Greenfield and his wife Rose of Foxfield, CO; five grandchildren, Brock Greenfield of Clark, SD, Blake Greenfield of Rapid City, SD, Laci Greenfield of Bruce, SD, Erica Greenfield and Leah Greenfield, both of Foxfield, CO; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by one daughter, JoAnn; one son, Gary; and her parents.
