Mrs. Byrne died Friday, Jan. 8, in a Temple hospital.
She was born on June 15, 1923, to Lt. Ben R. and Bertha Jacobs in Manila, Philippines. She grew up in many places around the world and attended seven different high schools. She later graduated from Brenau College in Georgia in 1944. She worked in social work in South Dakota before moving to Germany. On June 11, 1955, she married Charles E. Byrne Jr. at Peace Lutheran Church in Arroyo Grande, Calif. They lived in the oilfields of West Texas. In 1976, they moved to Cairo, Egypt, where she managed the Ma'adi Messenger newspaper. She was an active substitute teacher. They retired to Temple in 1984. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Central Texas Area Museum in Salado. She was preceded in death by her husband.
Survivors include two sons, Rob Byrne of Allen and Thomas Byrne of Texas; three daughters, Patti Crawford of Austin, Teri Bielefeldt of Grapevine and Jenni Byrne of Temple; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church Food Pantry, 2109 W. Ave. H, Temple, 76504; the Ronald McDonald House, 2415 S. 47th St., Temple, 76504; or the Salvation Army, 2604 W. Ave. M, Temple, 76504.
