Mrs. Mattie C. Nelson, of Dorminey Hill community, peacefully passed away June 26th. Mrs. Nelson was born in 1848, was raised in Houston county and was married to Mr. John Nelson of said county who a few years afterwards became a citizen and prominent planter of this county. Mrs. Nelson said she was convicted of sin when she was 17 years of age and as a dutiful child she referred the matter to her mother, who said, "Mattie, my dear child, it will all come right some day." So the powers of life and death as it were continued to wrestle over her precious soul till she was 23 years of age in the month of April. She said, "Mr. Dyar, I saw Jesus just as plain as I see you, and since I have had doubts, and fears along the way but now I am ready to go. I don't wish to stay here longer." After her conversion she followed Christ in baptism, became a consistent member of the Primitive Baptist church. She leaves behind to mourn her departure six sons, their wives and children, and one dear daughter-in-law and children who husband, Mr. Jim Nelson, passed over the river a few years ago. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the entire community. Even the colored people came to the gate with bowed heads doffed hats and solemn tread and said, "We would see grandma." The body was interred in Wesley Chapel graveyard Monday afternoon. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. L. E. Pierce. Friends, children and loved ones, May we the living by the help of God, meet her in the sky. Your sorrowful friend. W. T. DYAR.
(Note from Sherrie Nelson: Margaret's obituary says she was born in 1848 but her grave at Wesley Chapel shows her birthdate as October 30, 1842.)
