Mr. Thomas Chess died at his home near Jacksonville, this county, Wednesday, April 9th, at the age of 67 years, 2 months and 12 days. Although he had been quite ill for four weeks with kidney trouble, his death was very unexpected, the immediate cause being heart disease. His youngest son stepped to his bedside, on coming into the house and inquired how he was. He replied, "I am very sick." Almost immediately he was gone. Mr. Chess was born only about a mile from where he died, the latter place being his home nearly the whole of his life. He was an affectionate husband, a kind and loving father, one of the best of neighbors, with a thoroughly kind and open heart for all in distress, and a good citizen. He fought in defense of his country in the war of the rebellion. His regiment was the 11th Pennsylvania infantry.

He was married about 42 years ago to Martha Grim who shared with him the joys and sorrows of life and is now left to deeply mourn his loss. They had ten children born to them, only five of them yet living. Funeral services were conducted at the house by the writer, Thursday, the 10th, after which the body was laid to rest in the McCracken grave yard on the hill a short distance from house. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of the whole community.
