ROCKDALE — J.R. Whiteley Jr., 77, of Mount Vernon, formerly of Rockdale, died Saturday, Jan. 9, at his home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with the Rev. Calvin Springer and the Rev. Earl Presley officiating.

Burial will follow in Forest Grove Cemetery near Rockdale.

Mr. Whiteley was born on Dec. 19, 1932, to Julius Ray Sr. and Mary Lee Sparks Whiteley in Milam County. He was a 1950 graduate of Rockdale High School. On Oct. 31, 1950, he married Sarah Ellen "Sue" Crim in Rockdale. He served in the U.S. Army, 1953-1955. He worked for Texas Utilities for 37 years, retiring in 1992. He lived in Rockdale, Fairfield, and Mount Vernon. He was a member of First Christian Church in Rockdale.

Survivors include his wife of Mount Vernon; a son, Mike Whiteley of Mount Vernon; two daughters, Libby Kenjura of Chappell Hill and Tina Magness of Corsicana; a brother, Jerry Whiteley of Katy; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
