LeRoy E. Higgins, 87, of Lawrenceville, GA, and formerly of Fort Dodge died on Thursday, December 31, 2009, in Lawrenceville.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 9th at First Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Bird officiating. Burial will be at North Lawn Cemetery with full Military Rites conducted by the V.F.W. Post 1856. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home.
Surviving are his daughters Nancy (Dennis) Lane of Monroe, GA., Cynthia (Richard) Andersen of Cedar Rapids, Michele (Larry) Hibbard of Lawrenceville, GA; 6 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.
LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents Roy A. and Carrie (Butrick) Higgins; wife Eula (Douglas) Higgins and sister Marian Gant.
LeRoy Earl Higgins was born September 3, 1922, in Lake City. He attended school there before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1941; during WWII. On September 19, 1943, LeRoy married Eula Douglas in Chicago, IL. Together they established their home in Fort Dodge, where LeRoy owned and operated Higgins Phillips 66 Gas Station for 23 years. He then worked for Land O' Lakes for 10 years. LeRoy was the Director of Transportation for the Fort Dodge School System until he retired in 1982. LeRoy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fort Dodge for over 50 years. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, golf, reading, boating, fishing, and bowling. Along with all these interests he was also a member of the American Legion, Chamber of Commerce, Service Station Operators Association, Iowa School Bus Association, Good Sam's Club, Toastmasters and a Bowling League. He received awards from the Fort Dodge Community College, Phillips 66, Toastmasters and the Masonic Lodge.
Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
