Calvin, the son of Charlie L. Lively and Chattie (Bryant) Lively was the second of 4 children. He was born at Kings' Daughter Hospital in Temple, Texas, reared in Bryant Station, Milam County, Texas and graduated from Yoe High School, Cameron, Texas in 1940.

He joined the Navy as an S1-C on May 14, 1944 and received his basic training at Camp Wallace, Texas and San Diego, California. He sailed for foreign duty in August on a destroyer and participated in the invasions of Leyte, Mendora, Luzon and Corregidor. He died on May 27, 1945 when a kamakaze plane struck the USS Braine. He was the recipient of a Purple Heart.

Calvin was buried at sea but a military memorial marker is next to the graves of his parents.
