City Street Commissioner Second Official to Die in Few Days; Funeral Set for Wednesday
Patrick Alwell, 214 Manford street, city street commissioner and prominent First Ward democratic party worker, died Sunday evening at 7:45 o'clock at St Elizabth hospital where he had been a patient since last Monday. He had been ill since Thanksgiving day with ulcers of the stomach and was in a critical condition when he was taken to the hospital. An operation was performed upon him Saturday and a cancerous develpment was found. Mr Alwell, a native of County Cavan, Ireland, was born in 1869 and came to this country with his parents, Patrick and Mary Alwell, when he was three years old. The family came directly to this city and the elder alwell was for years employed by the city. The son attended school in this city and at the age of 20 went to New York City where he was employed by the Kenney Construction company. Later he went to St Louis and took employement with the Rockwell Construction company. FUNERAL WEDNESDAY. Fourteen years ago he returned to Lafayette and had ever since resided here, living with a sister on Manford street. He never married. Mr Alwell had a legion of friends and was a hard worker in street department a position to which he was appointed in January, 1930, when Mayor John B Hudson took office. He was the second head of a city department to died in a few days, Hallie Bohan, in charge of the city crematory, being found dead Friday. Mr Alwell is survivied by three sisters, Mrs Minnie Potter of Chicago, Catheirne Alwell and Mrs Frank Rock of this city. He also leaves five nieces. Mr Alwell belonged to St Ann's Catholic church and was a member of the Jackson club. The body was removed to the Vianco funeral home. The funeral will be conducted from St Ann's church Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock; burial in St Mary's cemetery.
