Canby (Special) -- Sarah Belle Berkey, 84, died Wednesday morning in a fire which destroyed her home on Gribble Creek road, three-and-a-half miles southeast of here.
Flames and heat thwarted efforts by a neighbor, Leonard Wolfer, to rescue the woman from the house, Clackamas County sheriff's deputies Chuck Battaglia and L. Ryan reported.
Wolfer saw flames coming from the one-story house as he drove to work. He saw the victim lying on the floor in the kitchen but was unable to remove her from the flaming building.
The fire started in a bedroom in the southwest corner of the house, apparently from an overturned coal oil or kerosene lamp, Battaglia reported.
