Rev. Ralph W. Anderson, 90, of Michigan City passed away on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010 at 9:50 p.m. at The Arbors in Michigan City.

Services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Root Funeral Home with the Reverends Everett and Lois Shadduck officiating. Cremation will follow and burial of the ashes at a later date in Meadow Brook Cemetery in Gilman, Wis. A viewing will be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Root Funeral Home.

Rev. Anderson was born April 13, 1919 in Drammen, Wis., to the late Harry and Florence (Salisbury) Anderson.

On April 18, 1942, in Gilman, Wis., he married Mabel Alveda Smithrud who passed away on June 5, 2008 after 65 years of marriage.

Surviving is one daughter, Carol Garrett of Michigan City; three sons, Gerald (Dorothy) Anderson of Michigan City; Conrad (Karen) Anderson of Davison, Mich., and Charles (Kathy) Anderson of Knoxville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and one sister, Lila (Clyde) Buck of Barron, Wis.

Preceding him in death was one granddaughter.

Rev. Anderson was an ordained minister of the Church of the Brethren receiving his ordination on Dec. 22, 1947. He was a graduate of Bethany Theological Seminary class of 1951 and graduated from Manchester College class of 1948. He pastored the Minot-Surrey yoked parish from 1951-1953. He pastored at Haxton, Colo., from 1953-1956. From 1956-1958 he pastored in Virden, Ill. He moved to Franklin Grove, Ill., and pastored there from 1958-1963. He then moved to South Bend, Ind., and pastored there from 1963-1965. He became pastor in Michigan City in 1965 until 1973. He pastored the Elm Street Church in Lima, Ohio from 1973-1984. Since retiring he served as interim pastorate at the Lewiston Church of the Brethren in Lewiston, Minn., for six months in 1985. He did pulpit supply for four United Church of Christ congregations in Lima, Ohio and then moved to Michigan City in 1990. He continued to do pulpit supply in the Michigan City area for many years.

Previous to entering the pastoral ministry he taught school at the Fair Oaks School near Eau Claire, Wis., from 1940-1942. He received his teacher education at the University of Wisconsin from 1938-1940.

He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946 attaining the rank of first lieutenant in the signal corps.

Memorials may be made to the Church of the Brethren or Manchester College.
