"Selah Tennant, 80 years old, 1807 Sanford Street, Muskegon Heights, a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home Thursday after a brief illness. He was born June 23, 1850 at Plants Hollow, PA and came to Michigan with his parents when he was a boy.
The Federal Army in the Civil War numbered in its ranks some 1,523 soldiers who were but 14 years old and Mr. Tennant was one of them. Enlisting in the Fifth Michigan Calvary at Detroit October 8,1864, after failing to make the Third at Grand Rapids, Mr. Tennant saw action at Stone River, Goose Creek, Decatur, Alabama and Hustsville, Alabama serving with Thomas' army.
He was fifer in the volunteers and was mustered out of the service at Victoria, Tennessee, January 9, 1866.
He was married in Ontario to Miss Fannie Ridker who died several years ago. He later went to California where he resided for 40 years, but in 1912 he came to Muskegon and was married here nine years ago to Mrs. Madge Eichelburg, who survives.
Mr. Tennant, who came here originally in 1862, was a member of the Phil Kearny Post, No. 7 G.A.R.
Besides his widow, surviving are one niece, Mrs. Lulu Vallas of Muskegon, four nephews, Elmer Stone of Traverse City, Edwin and Elwin Stone of Muskegon and Ray Stone of Bitely."
