Philomena died in a fire at the farmstead in Graham County Kansas on April 24, 1921, at the age of 33. There are two descriptions of the fire. She was lighting the kerosene burner to heat the washer to wash clothes in either: 1) the detached wash house or 2) the washer was in the family home. The home may have burned completely during this explosion if the fire occurred in the home. The fuel exploded and burned her fatally. Her husband Steve rushed her outside to put out the flames to no avail. It is thought she lived for a few days after the fire. She left 8 very young children: Catherine, age 12; Regina, age 11, John, age 9; Helen, age 8; Ferdinand, age 5; Agatha, age 3; Carl, age 20 months; and Leo, age 3 months.
