ALLEN G. CHERRYHOLMES
Allen G. Cherryholmes, a former merchant of Derby, died October 3, 1940, in Humeston, where he had made his home for some time with his niece, Mrs. Elsie Lowe and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gibbs. He had reached the age of 88 years, 2 months and 6 days. He had been ill for a week.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Floyd A. Smith, were held at the Baptist church in Humeston, Tuesday afternoon, with burial in the family lot at Last Chance.
Allen G. Cherryholmes, son of John and Mary Cherryholmes, was born in Ohio on August 27, 1852. At an early age he moved with his parents to Lucas county, Iowa, to a farm six miles northwest of Humeston, where they lived until 1898.
He was married to Matilda Bevard, of Clarke county, in 1881. To them was born one daughter, Minta, who died in infancy. His wife preceded him in death 26 years ago.
In 1898 the family moved to Derby where he engaged in the hardware business. In 1914 they moved to Jamaica, Iowa where he and his brother, J. D. Cherryholmes, continued in the same line of business until about a year ago, when he sold his business on account of the infirmities of old age. He had been a member of the M. E. church for many years.
