He was the only one of Elijah Sr's children who did not move to Missouri.
His father died when he was 3 and his mother when he was 9. He went to live with his aunt Rachel Jolliff Rhea. His brothers, Randolph and James went with their uncle Green Depriest to Oregon Co, Mo. and there Randolph joined the Confederate Army, while Elijah was in the Union Army.
Elijah may have married first to Rose Faulkner. (His son, Lewis' death certificate lists her as his mother, and he was born in Aug 1866, then Elijah married Sarah Forbes in Nov 1866.)
Elijah was 41 years old when he married 15-year-old Sarah Ellen Forbes, Nov 1, 1866, and raised her 3 younger brothers. Sarah died in 1874 having had 5 children in only 8 years; she was only 23 years old.
Then Elijah married May 3, 1876 to Malinda Ann (Bryant) Faulkner (abt 34, widow of his cousin, Charles J. Faulkner). They had one son, Edward.
