Charles Ernest "Ernie" Battin, 93, of Ulysses, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born June 16, 1916, in Hopewell, to Charles L. and Blanche Frazee Battin. After his graduation from Macksville High School in 1934, his family moved to Garden City, where he attended Garden City Junior College and played football and basketball at the college.

On Oct. 12, 1938, he married Helen Bell in Garden City. She preceded him in death as did his parents; a son, Charles; two brothers, Merritt and John; and a half sister, Enid Doggett.

A lifetime farmer, Mr. Battin moved from Pierceville to Ulysses in 1956. He served on the Grant County Extension Council and served his church for many years as deacon and adult Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan Smith of Liberal, and Jari Lynne Sims of Manitou Springs, Colo.; a son, John Battin of Ulysses; a daughter-in-law, Janice Battin of Ulysses; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral was at Grace Baptist Church in Ulysses. Burial was at Ulysses Cemetery.
