Nancy Elizabeth Seymer/ Seymour was born in South Carolina. It is believed she was born into the Sumpter family in some way, but she was given for adoption when a child to Jedikiah Gideon Seymer and his wife Rhoda Cockrell Seymer. The Seymer's moved to Pickens County, Alabama when she was a young girl. It is believed Nancy was adopted to be a companion to Elizabeth Seymer who was her age and afflicted in some way.

After the Civil War Nancy met and married Sanford M. Adams of the Spring Hill Community of Pickens County, Alabama. Sanford was a war veteran and had only one arm, but men were scarce and Sanford had a profession as house painter with his brothers. They lived next door to her father and mother and also near Sanford's father, Joshua MacKeltree Adams and his second wife Mandy. As the years rolled on Nancy's maiden name Seymer mutated into Seymour.

Nancy and Sanford had four children - James Joshua (Josh), Jenks (Jiddy) Seymour, Lewis Stone, Margaret, and Mary Jane. In 1893, after the death of her husband's father and the untimely death of her nineteen year old daughter Margaret, Nancy and Sanford and their sons and orphaned nephew Sanford Butler moved to Richmond, Texas for an opportunity to own a business. When her husband Sanford passed away in 1896, Nancy kept the household until she passed in 1906. Nancy was a fine woman and kept the family together.
