N.L. HALSEY KILLED WORKING IN WOODS
FARMER BELIEVED TO HAVE FALLEN FROM LOAD OF POSTS UNDER HIS HORSES' FEET

Nathan L. Halsey was almost immediately instantly killed last week Wednesday, February 1, when in Rail canyon after a load of posts. Walter and James Simmons were in the woods at the time also getting other posts, but they were not with Mr. Halsey when the accident happened. In fact, nobody saw it and the details can only be conjectured.

It is believed he had got his load on his sled and had climbed on the front end of it, and the he then slipped and fell to the ground in front of the runners and almost under the heels of his horses. He had a vicious team and it is thought they started kicking, probably striking the man on the head. The team then ran and Mr. Halsey was thrown to one side as the sled started down the hill. An examination of his body afterward showed no bruises except for the crushed skull. This caused some surprise for it had been thought certain, at first, that the sled had passed over him.

His companions found his lifeless body in the snow beside the roadway and some distance away the horses were caught. They had been stopped by a tree between them after they had spilled the load off the sled. The body was taken to Mr. Halsey's home on Upper Prairie creek.

Funeral services were held at the Prairie Creek cemetery last Friday, conducted by Rev. L.R. Butcher, pastor of the Joseph Nazarene church.

Nathan L. Halsey was a son of Mrs. and Mrs. J.D. Halsey, pioneers of Wallowa county. They lived for years on Upper Prairie creek, and moved to Enterprise in more recent years, where J.D. Halsey died the latter part of last November. Nathan Halsey was born in the county May 15, 1880, and all his life had been passed here. He is survived by his mother, who lives at Enterprise, his wife and four children, and one brother, William Halsey, who lives on Prairie creek. He always was a very active man and for years was fond of race horses which he managed with great skill. It seemed the irony of fate that after he had handled such horses for years, he met death from the work team.
