He was born May 4, 1915 in Newport, KY the son of the late Charles Everett Abernathy and Della Fern Ardrey Abernathy.
Mr. Abernathy is a graduate of Short High School in Liberty. He went on to graduate from Indiana University where he played shortstop on the I.U. baseball team.
He served from 1942 until 1946 in the U.S. Army where he attained the rank of Captain. Upon discharge from the army he returned to Liberty and, along with his father, operated a Texaco and a Phillips 66 service station. He also drove an oil truck for 28 years and drove a school bus for 26 years. He was self employed for many years as a painter and did not retire until the age of 90.
He is a member of the VFW, American Legion, and the Liberty Country Club. He enjoyed working and playing golf. Mr. Abernathy is survived by his wife, Esther Bernice Jerome Abernathy to whom he was married March 2, 1943 in Liberty. He is also survived by two sons and daughters in law, Bruce & Joy Abernathy, Liberty; and Barry & Pam Abernathy, Liberty; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a sister Shirley Miller.
Private family funeral services will be conducted at Urban-Winkler Funeral Home with Pastor David Fields of the Mt. Pleasant Church officiating.
Burial with military memorial services will be conducted by the Simon E. Snyder American Legion Post 122 and VFW Post 1472 at West Point Cemetery in Liberty.
