Former Guard At Huntsville Dies

KERENS, July 9—(Spl.)—W. J. Hammett, 83, former Texas prison guard for 15 years, died at his home north of Kerens Sunday afternoon following an extended illness.

Hammett was a life-long resident of this area and was engaged in farming except while serving with the prison guard units at Huntsville and Sugarland.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 4 p.m. from the Inmon Funeral Chapel.

Burial in the Bazette Baptist cemetery.

The rites will be conducted by Rev. Frank Gilliham, pastor of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of Kerens, two daughters, Mrs. Essie Mae Johnson, Palestine, and Mrs. Garrett Holcomb, Trinidad; two sisters, Mrs. Ben Johnson, Kerens, and Mrs. George Enoden, Washington, D. C.; 10 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

1st wife Clara E. (Brady) Hammett 2nd wife Rosa Lula (Ratliff) Hammett buried at Trinidad City Cemetery, Trinidad, Texas and the son of William Isiah Hammett and Amanda Ann (Horn) Hammett.
