Chester P. Woodward, retired Gatesville contractor and nurseryman, died Sunday in the local hospital after an extended illness. He was 71.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Scott's Funeral Home chapel and were conducted by Rev. Curtis Beaird. Burial was in Restland Cemetery.
Mr. Woodward was born July 17, 1906, in Coryell County and was reared in the Hemmeline community. He married Ethel Benton in Gilmer in October, 1928. They lived in the Gatesville area all their married life.
Mr. Woodward was in the contracting business until 1968 when he retired to help his wife in the operation of a plant nursery. He retired from the nursery business in 1974.
He had been a member of the First Baptist Church since 1934 and was an active leader in the Jackson Sunday School Class, the Baptist Men organization, and the rest home ministry of the church.
Mr. Woodward is survived by his wife; one son, Charles Woodward of Baytown; two daughters, Mrs. John (Betty) Mahn of Mustang, Okla., and Mrs. John (Barbra) Boone of Newhall, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Thurman Estes of Gatesville and Mrs. Mabel Brewer of Dallas; one brother, Willie Woodward of Gladewater; and nine grandchildren.
Pallbearers for Mr. Woodward's funeral were Marvin Engelbrecht, James Boyd, Johnnie Barnett, Curtis Davis, Milton Williamson and Morris Bell.
Honorary pallbearers were other members of the Jackson Sunday School Class.
