MRS. A. Y. ROBERTS
PASSES AFTER SHORT
ILLNESS IN HOUSTON

It is with keen regret that we are called upon to chronicle the death of one of our most beloved friends, Mrs. A.Y. Roberts--a friend since childhood of the writer. We feel that it would be impossible for us to even do justice in trying to write of the life of our friend, but whatever we may say of her, will come from the heart.

Mrs. Anna Yarrington Roberts was born on August 29, 1853, at Rose Hill, Washington county, Texas. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Ladd, 936 Omar, Houston, Thursday afternoon, February 23, at 3 o'clock, following an illness of only a few days; the cause of her death being paralysis.

For many years Mrs. Roberts made her home in Rosenberg, conducting on of the first hotels here. She was the mother of P.H. Roberts, Jr., at one time publisher of the Rosenberg Herald. She was a woman of intelligence and refinement and her mind was alert to the general conditions of the world and the happenings of the time, to the very day of her death. She had the ability to write interestingly on any subject--this natural gift was reflected in her son, who has made newspaper work his life's work.

Mrs. Roberts loved everybody and she had a wide circle of friends in Texas. Her health was always good and she was able to travel as good and enjoy visiting as well as anyone many, many years younger. Her friends were always glad to see her and her relatives too, the only trouble being that her stay was not as long with each one as they would like because she had so many places to go. She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Houston and had been an active church worker all of her life. She was also a member of Rosenberg O.E.S. Chapter 429. For the past ten years she had made her home in Houston with her daughter, Mrs. Corinne Dunn.

Deceased is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Corinne Dunn, Mrs. Willie Songer and Mrs. Elizabeth Ladd of Houston, Mrs. Mabel Hayes of Lufkin ad Mrs. Aline McDaniel of Fort Worth; one son, Patrick H. Roberts of Topeka, Kansas; seventeen grandchildren, Misses Rhea Dunn, Ann and Lillian Ladd, Cecil Songer and Mrs. Perry Butler, Murry Songer and Tom Coleman, Jr. of Houston, Bruce, Horace, Jr., Rob Ray, Donald, Dean, Elizabeth Ann and Barbara Jean McDaniels of Fort Worth, Billy Coleman Hayes of Lufkin, Mrs. Kurt Below of Comfort and Mrs. Arno Blase of Rosenberg; five great-grandchildren, Natalie Jean Butler of Houston, Eugene Layton and Robert Dean Below of Comfort and Betty Ann and Arno Blase, Jr. of Rosenberg; one sister, Mrs. H.W. Rankin of 904 Hawthorne, Houston.

Funeral services were held in the drawing room of Settegast-Kopf Funeral Home in Houston, Friday afternoon, at 2 o'clock. Rev. J.N.R. Score of Houston, officiated in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends from various Texas points. The body was brought overland to Rosenberg for interment and a short service was held at the grave by Rev. C.M. Myers, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Rosenberg. Officers of the local O.E.S. formed a circle around the grave to honor their departed sister.

Active pallbearers were Perry Butler, Alvin Ladd and George Songer of Houston, Arno Blase and A.E. Pleak of Rosenberg and Jim Sterling of Daisetta.

The pure soul of our friend has gone back to the God who gave it and she will be sorely missed, but God doeth all things well, and in this knowledge only, let us be comforted. Friends in Rosenberg extend sympathy, deep and sincere, to the bereaved loved ones.
