He was born in Corpus Christi on June 10, 1910, to Frank Henry Rhew and Edna Redus Rhew.
Mr. Rhew graduated from Kingsville High School and attended Texas A&I for several years. In 1929, following the adage "Go West, Young Man, Go West," he headed for the Phoenix, Arizona, area, which at the time, was undergoing a transition from dry desert to rich irrigated farmland, thanks to Depression-era dams and power generation. He started out in the office of a cotton company, eventually managing a district which included a number of cotton gins.
In 1939, he left the security of a regular paycheck and began farming on his own. This was also the year he married Elizabeth "Betty" Bradfield of Phoenix.
By the late 1940s he had liquidated his agricultural interests in central Arizona in favor of land in the Yuma area, and began his lifelong career, and calling, in land development. By 1949, with three young children, he and Betty decided to return to his roots in Texas, by moving to San Antonio where he continued his land development interests. In 1973, he and his son, Frank Jr., acquired a farm in Wilson County, where he and Betty later built a home and retired and he became a member of the Floresville Masonic Lodge.
In his later years, he took great pleasure in riding around the farm observing the cattle and orchard operations. The days preceding his passing, with the hint of a bumper peach, crop, new calves at their mothers' side, and a spectacular wildflower crop in full display, could not have been a more satisfying closing chapter to his life.
Preceded in death by: parents; sisters Arementa Lord and Irene Rhew; brother, Redus Rhew.
Survivors include: wife of 64 years, Betty Rhew; children Frank Rhew Jr. (Ann), Karen Rhew, and Madeline Rhew; and grandchildren Rudd Rhew and Becca Rhew.
Graveside services were held in the Floresville City Cemetery, Sunday, March 28, at 3 p.m., officiated by Pastor Andy Tyson of the Floresville United Methodist Church.
Obituary in the March 31, 2004 edition of the Wilson County News, Floresville, Texas.
