Lewis Stowe From the Waterville Advance, 9/6/1911

Major Lewis Stowe passed to his eternal rest at a quarter after one o'clock Sunday morning Sept.3, 1911 after an illness in which he was confined to his home and his bed for a part of the time for the last four weeks. Major Stowe came to Waterville in June 26, 1856 from South Adams. Massachusetts. He secured the claim of 160 acres upon which he has made his home ever since. He built the first hotel in the town. Major Stowe has always taken a lively and active interet and an important part in all schoo, church, and civil affairs, not oly of his home town, but also of the State, serving in many important offices of trust for the good and uplift of humanity. He served as Representative in the State Legislature in 1872. (Note from LT: it may have been 1873)

From July 1st, 1874 to July 1st, 187, under the nomination of the Rt. Rev. H. B. Whipple, Bishop of Minnesota and the appointment of President Grant, he served as U. S. Indian Agent at the White Earth Agency Minnesota.

Major Stowe was born August 4, 1828 in Halifax, Vermont, a son of David and Elizabeth Stowe. His father was of English and his mother was of Irish descent. He was the third in a family of four children, all of whom have now gone to their eternal home.

In May,1850, Major Stowe married Hannah A. Babcock of Radsboro, VT (Note from LT: should be Readsboro) who was born july 20, 1829 in Massachusetts and who entered into the rest that remaineth for the people of God, September 8, 1900.

The surviving members of his family are four sons and three daughters (one beautiful daughter Eva, having died in August of 1881 at the age of 19 years) as follows: Rev. Andrew Stowe wife and four children and four great grand children; Mrs. Mary Stowe (F. M.) Fish and son, and Dr. Alvah J. Stowe and two sons, all of Minneapolis, Mrs. Lizzie Stowe (E. P.) Chittenden, husband and son, of St. Mary's School Knoxville, IL; Mrs. Emma Stowe (E. L.) Maddox, husband and three children of Grand Rapids, MI. Herbert H. Stowe, wife, three children and one great grandchild; George E. Stowe wifef and two chidlren all of Waterville, Le Sueur Co., MN.

The funeral will be held this afternoon from the Episcopal church. Rev. Crickmer will conduct the srevice and Dr. Tanner of Faribault will deliver the sermon.

The interment takes place in Sakata Cemetery in the family lot which is a part of the Stowe homestead.

The business houses were closed during the services as a mark of respect for the deceased and his family.
