LADY—John Alvin Lady, 1758 Winona Boulevard, Hollywood, passed away March 30, 1949. A native of Princeton, Ky., he had been a resident of California 40 years, and of the community for the past two years. Husband of Susan C. Lady who passed away three weeks ago, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Bessie Hagen of Hollywood; one grandson, Truman Hagen of San Francisco; two granddaughters, Mrs. Carolyn Thompson of Los Angeles and Mrs. Margaret Nelson of San Bernardino. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Turner & Stevens East Pasadena Mortuary, 17 South Sierra Madre Boulevard, Rev. W. Fay Butler officiating. Internment, Montecito Memorial Park, San Bernardino.
--
He was a son of John Alvin Lady and Amanda Ruth Hunter. His father died just a matter of days before he was born, and his mother returned with her children to Washington County, Tennessee, from which she'd come. About the time he was 20 years old, he relocated to Johnson County, Missouri, where about 1884 he married Susan Carrie Culley. By 1910, he had relocated his family to Jackson County, Missouri, where he was a streetcar motorman, and by 1920 he had moved them to Bonneville County, Idaho, where he farmed for awhile. Their next move was to Riverside, California, where he was a grain farmer (remember, this was the 1930s, before they began to pave over the orchards). John and Carrie Sue had two children:
Pearl Elizabeth "Bessie"
Charles Fain
