He was a son of John Alvin Lady and Amanda Ruth Hunter. His father died just a matter of days before he was born, and his mother returned with her children to Washington County, Tennessee, from which she'd come. About the time he was 20 years old, he relocated to Johnson County, Missouri, where about 1884 he married Susan Carrie Culley. By 1910, he had relocated his family to Jackson County, Missouri, where he was a streetcar motorman, and by 1920 he had moved them to Bonneville County, Idaho, where he farmed for awhile. Their next move was to Riverside, California, where he was a grain farmer (remember, this was the 1930s, before they began to pave over the orchards). John and Carrie Sue had two children:
Pearl Elizabeth "Bessie"
Charles Fain
