"Blackie Barnhart, Victim Of Tragedy Saturday Night"
Crawford C. (Blackie) Barnhart, Jr , 37, Waynesboro R D 4, burned to death at 6:30 p.m. Saturday
when he was trapped in the flaming cab of his truck after it hit a guard rail post near Royzerville.
A water tank on the flat truck bed broke from its moorings and crashed forward against the cab, pinning Barnhart against the steering wheel.
Fire burst out almost instantaneously. State oolice said there was a two-gallon can of gasoline in the cab and it and the broken fuel tank fed the inferno.
BLOCKED BY FLAMES
Bystanders were helpless to answer the victim's plea for aid as sheets of flame enveloped the
cab. Witnesses to his fiery death Included his 12-year-old son, who was a passenger in a second truck, which had followed Barnhart down the Pen Mar Road.
State police said Barnhart was westbound on the road when his truck veered to the right and hit a post in front of the north wall of the concrete bridge at Stop Four. Barnhart apparently braked
to miss hitting a car coming off the bridge as the Saturday evening snowstorm turned the road into a sheet of ice.
Mr. Barnhart was born in Waynesboro, June 7, 1925, the son of Crawford C. Sr. and Margaret Leisinger Barnhart. He attended the Washington Townships schools. All of his life was lived in the vicinity.
He had been employed by the Smithsburg Doubleday plant for 5 years, and the last year and a half was in charge of maintenance at the Chambersbrg Marathon plant. He operated a water hauling business.
He served in World War II for three years in the Army.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Bricker Barnhart and three children, Barbara Ann, Crawford III and Pamela Jane, all at home. Also, his parents, Waynesboro. two brothers, Orville, Williamsport, MD., and Robert, Chambersburg.
Burial in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
