The William Foster family moved from Donegal, Ireland to Scotland when Robert was about 15.

Robert came to Canada from Scotland. Robert left his wife and young son with her mother and her large family in Scotland. After working one year, Robert sent money for his wife and son to take passage to Canada.
Robert is listed in the 1870 census at Glen Haven, Grant County, WI. His occupation is listed as a farmer with his sons Wm.26, James 21, as farm laborers.
Robert filed his homestead application #4198 at Vermillion because Sioux Falls had no land office. A Deputy District Clerk from Minnehaha Co. signed an affidavit for Robert. On 10-15-1872 Robert pd. $14 for his 160 acre homestead.
Robert traveled with the Andrew Lifto family from Glen Haven to Minnehaha County October 3. It had taken them a month by covered wagon. They stayed with those who had come before them until they could build sod shanties for themselves and their livestock.
Robert is buried in Bethel Cemetery, Dakota Territory.
