Obituary of Mrs. Sarah Pound: The Courier, Stafford, Kansas 5/23/1918:
Mrs. Sarah Pound, better known as Grandma Pound, one of the early settlers and also one of the oldest residents of the county, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. O. Gere, at Stafford, Kansas, on Thursday morning, at 12:15 o'clock.
Sarah Mattix was born in Sullivan County, Indiana, on April 29, 1830, and died in Stafford, Kansas, on May 16, 1918, age 88 years and 18 days. She was married to James David Pound in Sullivan County, Indiana on August 11, 1853. To this marriage were born nine children, four boys and five girls. Two boys, Daniel R. and Willie, died in infancy. One daughter died at Stafford, Kansas, on July 12, 1895. The remaining six children survive her and are as follows: Mrs. Nancy Caroline Dellinger, Stafford, Kansas; Stephen G. Pound, St. John, Kansas; Mrs. Mary C. Certain, New Albany, Kansas; Martin I. Pound, Stafford, Kansas; Mrs. Emily Gere, Stafford, Kansas; and Mrs. Bettie Weir of Yuma, Colorado.
She moved with her husband to Shelby county, Illinois, in October 1856, and to Kansas in October, 1875 and located in Wilson county for about two years. Then she moved to Stafford county and located on a homestead south of Stafford, where they resided until the death of her husband, and for some time afterwards with her son Mart and her youngest daughter Betty, after which time she made her home with her children. In early married life she professed faith in Christ and united with the little flock Baptist church in Shelby county, Illinois. On moving to Kansas she united with the Missionary Baptist church of Wilson county and after moving to Stafford county she united by letter with the Baptist church of Stafford of which church she was a member at the time of her death.
Grandma was a loving mother and a good neighbor. She will be greatly missed by her relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the home of Mr. And Mrs. A. O. Gere and were conducted by Rev. J. S. Moore, pastor of the First Missionary Baptist church of St. John, Kansas. Interment was made in the Stafford cemetary.
The Courier joins the many friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
