An Obituary from "Gatesville Messenger & Star Forum," Thursday, January 10, 1974:

Tom Nelson Smith, 72, of Gatesville died at 5 p.m. Monday in the local hospital He was a retired carpenter.
Funeral services were held at 4 pm Tuesday at Scott's Funeral Home chapel and were conducted by Minister Lewis Hunter. Burial was in Restland Cemetery.
Mr. Smith, a native of McDade, lived in Bastrop County most of his life. He lived in Houston for ten years before moving to Gatesville a year ago.
He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Lillian Schultz of Gatesville; five brothers, Wilburn Smith of Victoria, Dixon Smith of Bastrop, Leslie Smith of Montana and Hulbert Smith and J. C. Smith, both of Houston; three sisters, Mrs. Lillie Jennings, Mrs. Adele Clayton and Mrs. Willie May Huffman, all of Houston; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers for Mr. Smith's funeral were Bobby Jones, Rudolph Schultz, Ronnie Schultz, Rudy Schultz, Donald Schultz, Darrell West and Hebert Huffman.
