CIVIL WAR VETERAN SUCCUMBS TO LONG ILLNESS IN MARION, Joseph A Crayne Dies
Early Wednesday - Served Under Grant and Sherman
Joseph A. Crayne, veteran of the War Between the States, died at six o'clock Wednesday, June 26. He had been ill for several weeks. Mr. Crayne was past ninty-one years old, having been born February 9, 1838. His wife, Miss Janie Deboe, sister of the former United States Senator W. J. Deboe, died nearly forty years ago.
During the Civil War Mr. Crayne served for three years under Grant and Sherman. He was in the battles of Shiloh and Lookout Mountain and made the famous March to the Sea with Sherman.
Surviving Mr. Crayne are eight sons and daughters: Mrs. Abe Hunt, Sherman
Crayne, Mrs. Ellen Jacobs, Mrs. Nannie Hunt, Mrs. Sol B. Hunt, Mrs. Nonie Gass and Mrs. C. L. Hughes. Funeral services were held at Piney Fork Thursday afternoon.
