Leonard Earl "Pops" Heathcott Sr.
Funeral for Leonard Earl "Pops" Heathcott Sr., 83, Lawton, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Whinery-Huddleston Chapel with Chaplain Captain Daniel Claypoole officiating.

Mr. Heathcott died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, in Lawton.

Burial with full military honors will be at Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin.

He was born March 31, 1926, in Driggs, Ark., to Otto and Dessie Denton Heathcott. He was raised and attended school in Wetumka. As the oldest child, he left school early to work in the oil field and help on the family farm. He enlisted in the Army in 1944 and served in Europe during the occupation of Germany. He returned to the States and was stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C., and finally at Fort Sill, where he retired in 1964. After his discharge from the military, he worked as a jailer at Lawton City Jail until his final retirement. Through the years, he enjoyed a number of hobbies and pastimes including hunting, fishing, bowling and watching just about any sport on television. However, the one hobby that always remained above the others was spending time with his family and friends. He was one of those outgoing guys who just never met a stranger and was liked in return by the people he met. His stories and visiting will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his two sons and daughters-in-law: Leonard Heathcott Jr. and Debbie, and Rudy and Cristina Heathcott, all of Lawton; three grandchildren: Edwardo Cruz, Rudy Heathcott Jr. and Araia Rhiannon; brothers: Gene, of Tulsa; and Dewayne, of Pryor; and two sisters: Louella Ray, Wetumka; and Euvonne Harrison, Tulsa; and a large extended family and many good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lourene Heathcott; and a brother, Joel Heathcott.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
