The Publicist. (Chandler, Okla. Terr.), Friday, June 9, 1899
Obituary.
Died: At his home in this city, Tuesday evening, June 6, John M. McCoy, aged 44 years, 7 months and 22 days. Funeral services were conducted from the home by Rev. A.B. Carpenter, at 2 o’clock p.m. Wednesday, and a large number of friends in sincere sorrow paid their last tribute to the memory of a good citizen who has gone from among us.
Mr. McCoy was an old time Oklahoman, having come to Guthrie at the opening in ’89 and to this county when it was thrown open to settlement in the fall of ’91. He secured a good claim three miles west of town which in addition to their Chandler home he leaves to his family.
Mr. McCoy was an active church worker all his life. His father was a Christian preacher and at the age of eleven the son united with that church. While living at Guthrie he was one of the staunch supporters of that denomination and he has been largely instrumental in placing the Christian church in Chandler on its present solid basis. His Christian character asserted itself in the fortitude with which he bore his last suffering. For five and a half weeks he suffered intensely, yet his thoughts were of his family rather than of himself. A week before his death he became very low and, thinking the end was at hand, he summoned his family to his bedside and most impressively pronounced a father’s blessing upon each of its members. To his own surprise and that of every one else he was better next morning and for a couple of days there was a gleam of hope that he might rally, but he was the first to perceive that the improvement was only temporary.
Deceased was a member of the order of Modern Woodmen who will erect a $100.00 monument to his memory and pay a benefit of $1000 to the family.
