Rev Ira Mason Hargett, D.D. of Traverse city, a retired Methodist minister, died Wednesday at Salem Nursing Home in Traverse City after being in failing health for three years. He was 85.

Father of Mrs. Harford Field of Traverse City and Glen Lake, Rev. Hargett served as a Methodist minister for 50 years, being elected to three general conferences, the Uniting Conference of the Methodist Church, and as a delegate to the Ecumenical Conference in Oxford, England. He was also a member of the World Committee on Evangelism and was registered in the 1934-35 volume of Who's Who in America. Early pastorates were in Iowa and South Dakota, and he also held pastorates in Racine, Wisconsin, Kansas City, Missouri, Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma and Louisville, Kentucky, retiring from the latter in 1951. He has been a reisdent of Traverse City since 1960.

Rev. Hargett was born near Lexington, Kentucky on May 17, 1881, attended Asbury College, Kentucky and Upland University, Indiana, and received the Doctor of Divinity in 1924 from Asbury College.

Surviving are the widow, Willie, who resides at Salem Nursing Home, two children, Mrs Field and a son, Mason V Hargett, M.D. of San Francisco; six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Two daughters preceded Rev Hargett in death.

Burial will be in the family plot at Maple Grove Cemetery in Empire.
