Deceased Name: PETER ADAMS , 71, OFFICER, ASSESSOR

Peter A. Adams, 71, of McHenry, a former justice of the peace, police and circuit court magistrate, and tax assessor for nine years in Richmond, died of cancer Saturday at Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry.

Mr. Adams was born in Johnsburg in 1926, was raised in Richmond and lived for the past 24 years in McHenry

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific theater during World War II. He worked as a painter with his brother for 11 years after the war.

Mr. Adams was then employed as a painter with International Decorators Co. of McHenry until his retirement.

He was also a member of American Legion Post 253. While a resident of Richmond, Mr. Adams was a member of the motorcycle police patrol.

In the mid-1970s, he was appointed to the McHenry Police Commission, where he served for 17 years, by former Mayor Joseph Stanek.

"Pete was a wonderful man," said Stanek. "Everyone who knew him liked him."

Mr. Adams is survived by his wife of 50 years, Etta; one daughter, Charlene Fitzl; two sons, Peter A. and Andrew; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and a sister.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the George R. Justen and Son Funeral Home, 3519 W. Elm St., McHenry. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home
