Indianapolis News - Wednesday, December 22, 1875:

The death of Mr. Oliver Tousey, which occurred at 1 o'clock this morning at his North Meridian Street residence, will be sad news to his many warm friends and personal acquaintances in this city. Mr. Tousey's death was very unexpected, his physicians only yesterday pronouncing his recovery quite probable, and the deceased himself did not realize his illness was of so serious a character. Mr. Tousey had been confined to the house about two weeks in his last sickness with inflammatory rheumatism, suffering intensely from that complaint. Rheumatism on the tissues of the heart was the pronounced cause of his death, Mr. Tousey having been perfectly unconscious since 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

The deceased was born in Boone County, Kentucky on August 28, 1821, and removed to Lawrenceburg in this State when yet a boy, engaging in the dry goods business at that place. In 1846, he was married to Miss Mary Eliza Eddy, daughter of the Rev. Dr. Augustus Eddy, and the following year, he removed to this city, continuing in the retail dry goods business up to 1852 when he engaged entirely in the wholesale dry goods business, and at the time of his death was an active member of the firm of Byrum, Cornelius & Co. He was President of the Branch Bank of the State of Indiana prior to its closing up business and also a heavy stockholder in the Indiana National Bank. Mr. Tousey's first wife died in 1851, and in 1854 he was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Rush of Virginia State, who deceased March 1874. The surviving children are:

Mrs. Hugh Wlson, Chicago, Illinois
Mrs. Frank Fletcher, Indianapolis
Miss Emily Tousey, Indianapolis
Miss Lydia Tousey, Indianapolis
Miss Bertie Tousey, Indianapolis

Mr. Zeiman Tousey, residing in the Southern part of the State, is a brother of the deceased; Mrs. Elizabeth Gaines of Covington, Kentucky being his only sister. Hon. A. G. Porter and Mrs. George Tousey are own cousins of Mr. Tousey. During his early residence in Lawrenceburg, Mr. Tousey connected himself with the Methodist Church of which he has since been an active and consistent member. He identified himself with Roberts Chapel and afterward with Meridian Street Church, and at time of his death, was an exemplary member of the latter organization. By close application to business, Mr. Tousey has accumulated considerable wealth, and honesty and fair dealing have always been marked characteristics in his life. The funeral services will be held at the late residence of the deceased on North Meridian Street Friday morning at '10 o'clock. Dr. Watson, and possibly Dr. Sims, his old pastor officiating.
