from a Facebook posting by Tom Davis:

Rev. Samuel Tomlinson (1850-1933) and Jennie (McGaughey) Tomlinson (1868-1943) are buried in Section 40, Lot 247. Reverend Samuel Tomlinson is one of those sons and fathers whose lives are sandwiched between better known fathers and children. His father, Stephen Tomlinson (Section 2 Lot 40) was an Indianapolis druggist who bequeathed the money and the desire used to build Tomlinson Hall. Designed by Diedrich Bohlen and built in 1883 at the northeast corner of Delaware and Market, its auditorium, which could seat 4,200, hosted many public and political meetings and performances for over sixty years and spread the name of Tomlinson throughout central Indiana.

But it was his daughter, Mary Tomlinson, who became famous. Mary was born in Acton, about twelve miles southeast of Indianapolis, during a time when Samuel was living on his in-laws farm to take care of his health. A Disciples of Christ minister, he had founded 3rd Christian Church in Indianapolis, and was serving a church in Wabash, Indiana, when health concerns brought him to Acton. Here he recovered, and when Mary was about three, the family moved to Indianapolis where Samuel pastored Hillside Christian Church for four years before going on to Goshen, Elkhart, and finally to Fairland in Shelby Co., where Mary attended school.

Mary's distinctive gravelly voice, and a love of mimicry and recitation, caused her to pursue a career in the theater, much to Samuel's chagrin and protest. Theater and religion were not far removed from their days of animosity, and it was not an honorable profession for a preacher's daughter. So about the time the Shakespearean repertory company she was traveling with came to Indianapolis in 1913 to perform some shows at Riverside Park, Mary adopted a stage name to avoid embarrassing her family. She became Marjorie Main. And so the Tomlinson's are now remembered mostly by virtue of their daughter, and Crown Hill has become the resting place of Ma Kettle's ma and pa.
