Omer married Martha "Mattie" (Snyder) Alloway Murphy in Dearborn County on April 16, 1876. Mattie had 2 children from her previous marriage to John J. Alloway: Josie Vie Alloway and Solon J. Alloway. Solon was born just 3 weeks before his father's death. By the 1880 Federal Census, Omer, Mattie and Josie lived in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Solon lived with his paternal grandmother, and his paternal uncle and aunt in Petersburg, Boone, Kentucky. Mattie and Omer had 2 children: Robert Smith and Maud Ovida Smith (Juanita Newnam). Robert died in a wagon accident when he was only 13 years old.
