Parents were PATRICK CATTERSON from Ireland and CATHERINE EASTMAN from Mississippi. Catherine was distantly related to the Eastman who founded Eastman Kodak, and to a soldier Killed In Action during the Revolutionary War. She was the daughter of ABEL EASTMAN and CELESTE SALOME HARMON. Patrick's family came from Ireland , the Donegal area, and were of Scotch Irish ancestry, first landing in the Port of Philadelphia around 1790.

CIVIL WAR VETERAN

When John Hunt Morgan raided Indiana and Ohio in July, 1863, the State of Indiana called for volunteers to form "Minute Man" regiments for emergency service. Gov. Oliver P. Morton called for volunteers to defend the state and 65,000 men responded, forming 13 regiments and a battalion. ABEL CATTERSON signed up for the 107th Indiana Volunteer Regiment, a regiment exclusively of men from Indianapolis, under the command of Colonel Dewitt C. Rugg ,on 7/11/1863, and as a sign of respect was mustered into Company E as a Corporal. He was mustered out on 7/18/1863 when Morgan left the state on July 14th for Ohio, and the danger had passed.

Abel was a night patrolmen for the 8th Ward in Indianapolis in 1864, as listed in the Proceedings
of the Common Council of Indianapolis 15 February 1864 session.
