Fred registered for the World War I draft on September 12, 1918. He was described as tall, with a medium build and with blue eyes and brown hair.
The 1920 census report, enumerated on January 9, 1920, shows that they owned their home, Fred was employed by a glass works factory and Myrtle was keeping house. Household members were Fred and Myrtle and their two children Edgar and Floyd Engelking. Also present was their sister-in-law, Laura Engleking (age 30).
Laura was the mother of Jerry and Mary Louise Engleking. Mary Louise and Jerry were not listed in the 1920 census; however, it is very unlikely that they would not have been there with their mother. After their mother's death on July 27, 1920, Jerry and Mary Louise stay with their Uncle Fred and Aunt Myrtle.
In April 1923, Fred was employed by the Fisher Auto Body Company in Cleveland, Ohio. Myrtle was living in Indianapolis with Laura's two young children and was in the process of joining Fred when she became ill. She died April 28, 1923 while undergoing an operation for appendicitis at the Grandville Hospital in Cleveland. Myrtle was returned to Indianapolis a few days later and buried at Crown Hill Cemetery. Two weeks after Myrtle's death, Mary Louise and Jerry were placed in the Children's Guardian Home in Indianapolis.
Fred's second marriage was to Sadie May Hamilton on April 19, 1925. Sadie died two years later at her home near Uniontown and was buried at Riverview Cemetery, Seymour, Indiana.
The last record we found relating to Fred was in Robert Engelking's obituary. The obituary for Fred's brother shows that Fred and his sister Anna Layton were living in Union Hill, Arkansas. Robert's obituary was published in the The Tribune (Seymour, Indiana) September 29 1954.
