Gertrude Alice (Walton) Holmes Beard died on November 5, 2004. She was 96 years of age. She was born near Lizton, Indiana on July 24, 1908 and lived in Indianapolis most of her life except a short time in Chicago. Gertrude was the eldest of seven children born to Gladys (Rawlings) Walton and William Walton. Gertrude married Marion Beard at the age of 32 and together they operated Beards Food Mart and Epicure shop until Marion's death in 1971. Gertrude retired and became a dedicated gardener. She joined the Broad Ripple Garden Club in 1968 and was an active member until her death. She was a volunteer flower arranger at Lilly Pavilion for 18 years. She also was decorating chairperson for twenty years for the Clowes Hall Women's Committee. Gertrude was a member of the Crooked Creek Baptist Church since 1970. She was a member of the Indianapolis Family Support Center and the Arthritis Guild.
She is survived by a stepdaughter Jean Ann Oden, Florida, and seventeen nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at 2:30 p.m. at the Crown Hill Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment to follow in the Community Mausoleum. Contributions may be made to the Family Support Center and Auxiliary of the Children's Bureau or to the Crooked Creek Baptist Church on N. Michigan Road.
